Brief Description:  Spinner install (47-04,05)

I finally received enough spherical magnetic bearings to complete the spinner installation. The change to an opaque spinner means that we need to use this cool idea of magnetic bearings to find the holes. So in reading section 5 I saw that I could order these from Vans. Well I assumed I would get a set of bearings, but the first delivery I only got one. Lesson learned; don’t assume I will get enough to complete the job. So after I received another order of 5 bearings I was able to complete the job. Cyndi was able to help me center the spinner, which worked great. She down in front of the spinner and I rotated the prop, adjusting the spinner until it was completely centered. Then I tried to tape it in place, but I think I should have used some cleco clamps as well. Next, with 4 bearings taped to the inside underneath the holes I used a nylon washer and the two remaining bearings to find the correct position. This was so cool, that I actually videoed the bearing sliding into place. Then I taped down the nylon washer.

So let me review the lessons learned through the whole spinner fitting effort (so far):
1. Order at minimum 5 bearings (4 for inside and 1 to find the location on the outside.
2. When test fitting the spinner, get the blades pretty close to the final angle positions. The slot on the spinner can fit easily or be too tight depending on the angle of the prop blades (they’re not round at the root).
3. Once you remove the slots (with a thin blade dremmel cut-off wheel), don’t expand the slots in the spinner to slide past the blades. I recommend just shaping the hole immediately around the blade and don’t change the width of the lead in slot (remember he slots get filled back in with the piece that you just cut out, so it needs to be pretty close).
4. Once the spinner is in place, make sure that it is secure (can’t move when drilling the 4 holes).
5. Something that worked well for me with the opaque spinner was to attach a pointer to the engine marking the location of the aft spinner
