Brief Description: Fabricating cowling hinges and pins (38-03,04)
A lot more work than shown in the pictures here. Most of the hinges I had to create from scratch, since I had either messed up or ran out of hinge material making the plane side of the hinge. I had ordered extra a long time ago and now it was time to use some of it. So I started by creating the mating hinge that will attach to the cowling for each location. Then I fabricated the pins to match. In each case I added a little extra from what is called out in the directions…figuring I can always shorten them. For the cowling side hinges (F-12115), that secures the top cowling to the bottom, the directions call out 22 inch, but if you look at the picture, 22” puts it right in the middle of a hinge loop, so I made them ~22.25”. I also marked all the holes for the hinges. I usually tried to make them equally spaced with 5/16” on each end. It would have been nice to have a hole spacing template, but I just measured and calculated the spacing. Usually the spacing was just over an inch. I still have some trimming on the cowling, but I wanted to get the hinges ready first and I’m waiting for the magnetic bearing to install the spinner. I want the spinner installed so I can align the cowling.
