Brief Description:  Hanging the engine (46-08)

Today is the day...engine install. I rented an engine hoist ($35) to support a $28K engine…I figured it was worth it not to risk dropping the engine. I used adjustable tie down straps so I could use it to adjust the angle, which worked out pretty good. Once I matched the angle I didn’t have to make any more adjustments (fwd/aft). The rest of the adjustments I could make by just twisting the engine in the straps. With the help of Cyndi and Benjamin, we were able to fairly easily move the engine into place. Of course, as always, 3 out of 4 bolts went in fairly easily. The 4th was a little more troublesome and, of course, it was the hardest to get to. I used a couple socket wrench extensions in series to create a path to tap the bolt head in with the rubber mallet. A couple taps and it was clear the threads and I could get the nut on it. All was good. Once the bolts were secured, the next step was to put the full weight of the engine on the plane. All was still good. Thanks to all who wrote up there learning, this helped make this a pretty smooth install. Key was to test fit all the hardware ahead of time and make sure the bolts could get through. I had one interesting learning …with the extra weight from the engine the canopy was getting hung up from completely closing. It took me a while to figure out the cause, but it ended up being the fwd firewall leaning more fwd and pulling the canopy pivot point more fwd, thus the canopy fwd edge was getting caught on the instrument panel. I figure it will be fine once I install the top skin, but for now I just ran some tape from the top of the instrument panel to the top of the firewall. Works fine.
