Brief Description:  Canopy install (34-07)

It was a warm day (mid 60's), so I decided with the help of my Son Benjamin, that it was time to drill the side holes for the canopy. I installed the seats and since the seats were in I decided to climb in and see how it feels to do some pretend flying. Well everything checked out great...I just need an engine or at least to make some airplane noises. The only problem came when I tried to hop out. I stepped in using the tire and holding on to the roll bar. To get out, I thought I would just do the same but in reverse. I found the tire with my foot then went to transfer my weight to the tire and ...ooops, it wasn't there, there was nothing there but air. I had missed the tire completely and was now sliding down the outside of the plane with one grip on the roll bar, which wasn't enough to compensate for the weight transfer commitment I had made. I was now hanging from the cockpit by one leg that was wedged in side. I called for my son to help me, but no response. I managed to get my inside leg free and fall the rest of the way out. As far as I can tell the only damage was to my confidence (good thing no one saw me) and no damage to the plane.

Well I founf Benjamin gave him a couple wood blocks and then trapped him in the plane, then tapped everything down. We then proceeded to drill all the holes. I went ahead and drilled through the aluminum backing plate as well with the plexi-glass bit and it seemed to work fine. After I drilled all the holes I pulled off the canopy and final sized #27 all the holes and deburred them. I've tried a number of different deburr tools and techniques, but the best so far is just using my 3 flute deburr tool. It seems to give the best surface finish. I may come back afterward with some fine grit sand paper (400) on a pencil tip to smooth it out a little more. Anyway the canopy is just about done...except for the part where I have to scratch it up and smear epoxy on it...but that's for another day.
