I already did much of the map box prep (29A-07 & 29A-08), back when I was painting, so all I needed to do was attach the hinge and drill the holes under the panel and into the map box. This is easier said than done, I decided to drill the holes prior to assembly and riveting the map box together. It seemed like it would be easier and as it turned out it was…I think. I tried several times, unsuccessfully, to reach under the panel and locate the match drill holes with the #30 drill bit in the drill. With one hand holding down the map box and the other trying to find the hole. So my next attempt was to push the drill bit into the hole and try to attach the drill…that didn’t work either. What ended up working for me was to twist the bit by hand enough to mark the location on the map box corner, then remove the map box and drill it from the outside. In order to drill on the corner I had to start with a very tiny drill bit (#50 size), then I drilled it larger (#40). Next I reinstalled the map box bottom, along with the right panel to hold it in the correct place, then match drilled it from the top to a #30, then to a #19. It seems to have worked and I didn’t have to crawl into the plane upside down. I haven’t tried this idea yet, but I noticed the screw head doesn’t fit into the corner of the map box very well so I shaved of a flat on one side of the screw head, plus it will help with keeping it from rotating. I’ll let you know how it works.
