Brief Description:  Thoughts & how I got here

2012 was an interesting year sorting out the aircraft to build. In April I visited with Dennis Hackbarth at his home in Indiana, to discuss the Thatcher CX4 he built. He exhibited great workmanship and spent a whole day with me answering every question I asked. But after some consideration I determined I really wanted something that had room for a passenger.

Next I pursued the Zenith CH750, my friend Tom Marker is building one. But because of its dedication as a STOL aircraft, I soon found this did not fit the bill either. I wanted more of a cross country aircraft and this was not one of its strong suits.

From there it was a Wagabond PA-15/17 Traveler. Oshkosh was the venue to pursue this interest, which by the way, was also a great time to get to know other members of the local EAA Chapter I had just joined. I bought plans from WagAero and looked forward to building this aircraft in 2013 after I finished a couple of projects on our home.

As I started to get serious about building, the task was reviewed in detail and the build time, additional tools required, and need to learn new skills became a reality that stretched beyond what I thought I wished to invest. So around December I began again to search for a plane to build. The Thatcher was again reviewed primarily because it was a low cost and relatively low time build. But was not really a cross country airplane and single place, so this was quickly eliminated from consideration.

This brings me to the Zodiac CH650 with a Corvair engine. While this is offered as a kit plane I've decided to start it as a plans built plane. There are some parts that I do not wish to build, those requiring welding, that I will purchase from Zenith and that is one of the things that attracted me to this plane.
