Brief Description:  Main Landing Gear Mounts

My sister-in-law got married this last weekend so airplane building came to a complete stop. We had their reception at our house so I did several tours around the shop.

Installing the main landing gear mounts in the RV-7A is not a fun process! Before fitting and bolting the mount to the fuselage, the upper gear leg alignment bolt hole must be measured and drilled. These parts are machined with pretty tight tolerences so you have to manually sand the metal parts and lub them big time to get them to fit into each other. Once you get the alignment holes done, you take the assemblies apart and then comes the frustrating task of getting the gear weld mounts to fit into the the appropriate space...and then get about 20 bolt holes to line up perfectly. The plans tell you it's OK to cut a bigger hole in the bottom to get it to fit, but what they didn't tell you is to make sure you have all the quick-build assembly bolts that hold the wooded spacers removed. I fought with this weldmount assembly for 6 hours before I finally realized there was a bolt the boys from the Philippines installed under a flange that prevented the assembly from going in like it was supposed to. I finally found these hidden bolts by standing on my head in the cockpit with an inspection mirror. Once I got the bolt out on both sides, I completed the entire assembly (both left and right mounts) in about 3 hours. The total process ended up taking about 14 hours.
