Brief Description: Installing the Rudder Stops & Rudder Cables
Note the plans call for four rivets, but I had to use four pop rivets so I drilled two extra holes and installed flush rivets on the far-aft portion of the rudder stops I didn't have room for a bucking bar or squeezer when I followed the drilling instructions in the plans. Also for those of you who are looking at your plans, note how different these look from the Van's drawings. It took a lot of fitting, grinding, fitting, grinding; but I have 35 degree rudder deflection right and left with no binding on the rudder cables. This is how the stops should be drawn in the plans.
I didn't show any pictures of the rudder cable installation because it's pretty straight forward. Just make sure you don't push any of the #7 plastic bushings into the 5/8 inch holes until you have the bushings threaded onto the cables. You can't squeeze the bushings to get the cable threaded if they are already installed in the holes. Brian Carroll also told me to thread one bushing at a time through each of the 10 bulkheads before you finally push all the bushings into the holes. That's good advice because invariably, you will get in a hurry and forget a bushing while you are standing on your head trying to get the cables though the bulkheads. It's not fun getting them out once they are snapped in place.
