Brief Description:  Installing and Trimming Flaps

The upper skin on each of the flaps needs to be trimmed to fit flush against the fuselage with an even clearance gap throughout the inboard length of the flap. First I had to install the flap to mark how much material needed to be trimmed. The edge of the flap as assembled was about 1/8" - 3/16" too long. My goal was to have a consistent 1/16" to 1/8" gap between the flap and the fuselage. This is a trial and error process which takes a considerable amount of time because there was too much excess material to retract the flap to its full-up position so I could mark the entire width for trimming at one time. I had to retract the flap as far as I could, mark it, remove it, sand off the excess material with a belt sander, re-install the flap and do this process approximately four times for each flap. I also had to account for the step plate and the curvature of the fuselage. I am very pleased with the final gap on both flaps.
