Brief Description:  Setting the Wing Incidence

Now the critically important wing incidence needs to be measured and set. Van's plans tell you to cut a 3" wooden block and place a level on the forward spar; just forward of the skin butt joint with the other end of the level on a spacer placed directly over the rear spar web (like why don't they write this in English?... At least there's lots of pictures.) Then you pull, push, or sit on the wing until your leveling contraption is actually level. Placing shims on the sawhorse stands and checking several places along the entire length of the wing....well, needless to say this is another exercise in patience. I remember not too long ago at work I was askin God to teach me to have a little more patience....yep, I knew it before but I must have forgot. He really does answer every prayer!!! Some day I'm going to learn that if I can't stand the answer, I shouldn't be askin the question.

You can see in the second picture I was 1/10th of a degree off level. My solution...agressively lift the back of the wing and shake it up and down...but it was still 1/10 degree off...so then I gave it the ole heave-ho, with lots of old-guy grunting and pig-like noises, and managed to lift the entire airplane off 5 of 6 sawhorses ...and it still wouldn't move. That's how tight the rear spar fitting was (note the past tense). Nothing that a big pry-bar wouldn't fix...but then I had to re-level the fuselage, re-square the wings, re-set the plumb bobs and check the sweep again. Are we having fun yet???

After 2 1/2 hours I finally got the Sweep and Incidence perfect on both wings.
