Brief Description:  Fabricating/Mating Wheel Pant Halves

The Wheel Pants consist of two pieces, the VA-157A forward half and the VA-157B aft half. The challenge is these two pieces need to mate together so the fiberglass looks “seamless” but variations occur in the moldings when they were ‘laid-up”. On my wheel pants, I had considerable variations in the thickness and shape of the inner and outer flanges. The first thing you have to do is use a fabricated scribing compass to mark a cut-line on the forward half of the wheel pant to make up for the uneven fiberglass inner flange of the aft half of the pant. Next, I used a Dremel Cut-off tool and sandpaper on a 1x2x8 inch board to ‘level’ my cuts. You have to do this process several times to get the flanges on the forward and aft wheel pants pieces to mate so it has no gaps or irregularities.
