Brief Description:  Time to uncrate the Engine

It’s finally time to unbox my IO-360M1B. Ten years ago, 30 students from the local Technical College were touring my workshop. While I was in the heated garage with most of the students one of the 1st-year students only wanted to see my engine. Without my knowledge or approval, he went into the garage where my engine was stored, opened the box and cut the vacuum-sealed engine bag. I wasn’t aware the engine was no longer sealed until later that evening when I was cleaning up the shop. I put desiccant in the bag and taped it shut, but it’s been like this for over ten years. Montana doesn’t have the humidity like coastal states and I’m hoping the engine is alright.
Now for the BAD NEWS…when I opened the box, cut away the foam packing around the sealed bag, and then opened the bag I found the engine sitting in 3 ½ inches of clear water and oil. I was physically ill. Lycoming said they could recondition the engine for around $5,000. The intake pipes were corroded, the starter motor and electrical connections had external corrosion and the oil sump cover was corroded. GOOD NEWS…A friend helped me borescope the pistons, cylinders, valves, oil sump and we found no damage and the long-term storage oil was still coating all the internal surfaces we could see with the borescope. All the corrosion on the engine and prop-gear was external. We found a lot of external corrosion on the starter, but the brushes and core had none. Same with the fuel pump. I’ve got lots of wire brush cleaning and painting to do, but I think the engine is OK!!!
