Brief Description:  Upper Aft Skin (Turtle Deck) Prep

It’s finally time to rivet the Turtle Deck. Before I start riveting, though, I need to “feather” the edges of the skin so it transitions nicely on top of the lower and rear fuselage skins. First, I filed the edge (1st Pic), then I sanded with 120 grit sandpaper, and finally with a scotch-bright pad. The 2nd Pic shows a close-up of the finished (feathered) edge. After that was complete, I prepped all the holes and re-clecoed the skin for final riveting. Finally, I marked all the different rivet sizes for all the holes on the protective plastic so I wouldn’t have to keep referring to the builder’s diagrams. There are a lot of braces, bulkheads, and reinforcing-doublers under this skin that require different sizes of rivets. I also decided to put plumbing foam tubes on the canopy frame to keep me from dinging it up as I move it around my shop. (3rd Pic). I will have to repaint it now that I have scratches on it, but this will keep me from getting more scratches in the meantime.
