Brief Description:  Empennage Fairing Attachment

After I completed bundling the wires up-front, I started going through all my plans and schematics to ensure every task up to installing the canopy was completed and documented. Everything on the tail was done with the exception of the fiberglass fairing on the leading edge of the vertical stabilizer and the empennage fairing around the horizontal stabilizer. I don’t know if I correctly followed the instructions on what to rivet and what not to rivet on both the vertical and horizontal stabilizers several years ago when I built the tail section, but what I now know is I had to drill out 36 rivets and install nutplates to attach the fiberglass and aluminum fairings. That took a bunch of time and certainly would have been easier had I known not to install rivets. It took me about 13 hours to get the nutplates installed. Additionally, I installed equipment (like magnetometers) on angle brackets in the same places I needed to install nutplates, so I had to be very creative to align the nutplates located on the fuselage. I ended up drilling the holes for the nutplates, then pulling the nutplates to the holes using wires in two of the three holes so I could cleco the plates to install pop-rivets. These will all be covered by the fiberglass fairing and attached using flat-head screws.
