Brief Description:  Completed Avionics Configuration (except GNS 430W)

One of the biggest challenges to finish all the wiring in a complex, IFR equipped airplane is to make sure all the equipment ‘talks” to all the other equipment. In many ways, I wish I had outsourced his part of the project to a professional or at least used an integrated plug-and-play interface system. Given this oversight, I finally completed all the Avionics Configurations except for the Garmin GNS 430W. Garmin has a policy for its certified units where I can’t update the latest unit firmware as an amateur builder for experimental aircraft. All firmware must be updated by a certified Garmin dealership. I kind of understand this from Garmin’s perspective because they are liable for any equipment failures, especially in an IFR environment. The solution for me should have been simple…pull the GNS 430W and ship it to a dealer in either Billings or Missoula MT; they insert an updated card, download the firmware for the Communications and GPS; charge me for the service; and ship the unit back. The problem is my GNS 430W is ‘stuck’ in the avionics rack and I can’t get it out. Something is apparently wrong with the offset/double-locking mechanism that holds the unit in-place. I will have to wait until I can fly the airplane to a location where there is a dealership. The radio works fine in its current configuration and interfaces with my GRT HX EFIS, Garmin GTX 327 Transponder, Unison EchoUAT ADS-B, TruTrac Digiflight II VSGV Autopilot, Dynon D-60 EFIS, GDU 370 GPS Nav System, ACK E-04 ELT and the Garmin GMA 240 Audio System. The only thing that doesn’t work is the Flightstream 210 Bluetooth so I can use an i-Pad to update/integrate flight plans. That’s not a big deal and will work when I get the firmware updated. The good news is I can now tie up all the wire bundles and button-up the panel. I also created some books to use for in-flight /1st flight configuration that can’t be done on the ground and I created books for continued airworthiness maintenance and frequency intervals for the maintenance.
