Brief Description:  Completed Garmin GDU 370 NAV System Wiring

Today I completed all the wiring and integration for the Garmin GDU 370 NAV display. It is interfaced with the Garmin 340W WAAS Com/NAV radio and has alerts for Terrain with an altitude buffer, Arrival, Next Waypoint, Proximity to Approaching VNAV Profiles or Approaching Target Altitudes and Fuel Tank alarms which are integrated through the Garmin GMA 240 Audio system. The biggest function of the GDU 370 will be a Moving Map Navigational Display and since it’s integrated with the RS-232 and ARINC 429 input from the Garmin 340W it will show all the AOPA/Garmin Airport Directory Information for Airports and Flight Charts including NAV Data for nearest VOR, Intersection, City, Waypoint, FSS, ARTCC, Airspace, or Airport. It will accept the flight plan from the GNS 430W and will automatically update the plan once it’s changed in the 430W or my iPad. Like the iPad applications, it shows “safe taxi’, obstacles, height above terrain, weight & balance, etc. It will show approaches and waypoints including missed approach fixes. It has a tracking log, E6B calculator. It also retains a database of Active Flight Plan or Previous Flight Plans and will show vertical navigation with profiles to include Ground Speed, Track, Cross Track Error Heading, and Minimum Safe Altitudes. It’s about the same size as my iPad mini so for local flying it will be all I would ever want or need. I still think I will do all my flight planning on the iPad and will load data from the iPad directly to the GNS 430W. The tough part is learning how to use all this equipment; which has to be done long before I ever get the airplane off the ground. Those first 40 hours I have to burn before I can do any flying outside the local area are going to be very busy. I have decided to build a flight testing/training program for those first hours. I’m kind of excited about that.
