Brief Description:  Installing Audio Panel & Created New Spreadsheet

In the first picture, I am installing the Audio Panel. Initially, I had to remove the Audio Panel, Both Communications Radios, and the Transponder to install the back-plates. Once installed, the plates allow you to remove the radio from the front without adding additional looped wire (usually 8-10 inches). The plates mate to the back of the equipment without using screws.

As I started doing the final connections to all the electrical equipment and avionics, it became apparent each manufacturer gives very good instructions for integration as long as you purchase everything from the same manufacturer (ex. Garmin, or Dynon, etc.) There is an additional consideration for compatibility and integration when you connect dissimilar equipment. To make sure I didn’t miss anything, and to make troubleshooting easier for myself (or any future owner of this aircraft) I took several weeks to design an integration spreadsheet. Now, at a glance I can visually see every connection (down to the pin-level) of every wire. If I am completely done with all the connections, I color the Excel block “Green.” If I have the wire and termination pin complete, but I haven’t inserted into the correct d-sub connecter, for example, I color the block “Orange.” If I haven’t completed the wire, wire harness, or termination pin on a specific wire; or if I haven’t verified the wiring is correct and is “integrated” with other equipment, I leave it colored “White” The next two pictures show examples of what this spreadsheet looks like. I wasn’t sure this was worth the 40+ hours it took me to develop the spreadsheet until I found two wires that weren’t properly integrated. The component would have worked, but it wouldn’t have talked to other equipment on the panel. I’m certain I will find more wiring issues as I finish the final wiring in the panel so it’s worth the time and effort to update the spreadsheet as I go along. I am prone to work on this for a few days and then come back to it two weeks later; I know exactly what is done.
