Brief Description: Backup Batteries for Critical Systems
I decided early in construction to have enough backup battery reserves to fully power all mission critical equipment (Grand Rapids Technologies Electronic Flight Information System--GRT EFIS, GRT Attitude/Heading Reference System--AHRS, Garmin GNS 430 Wide Area Augmentation System--WAAS navigation system & Communications Radio, Autopilot and Autopilot Servos, Backup/Secondary Co-pilot Dynon EFIS, and the Electronic Ignition System) for 4.5 hours if both the aircraft battery and the alternator failed. Because I have so much weight in the front of the airplane, my tech advisor recommended I install all the backup batteries aft of the baggage compartment for weight & balance. Image 1 shows the platform I built to withstand 9.8 pounds of batteries and wiring at a 5-G load. Image 2 is the wiring harness and batteries installed on the platform. Image 3 is the associated switches to activate the emergency/backup batteries, test lights, and warning lights to warn of impending battery and/or alternator failure. These are mounted at the top of the panel directly above my prirmary EFIS
