Brief Description:  Magnetometers mounted in fuselage failed test

After pulling all the magnetometer (GRT and Dynon remote compasses) wiring out of both wings I started testing areas in the fuselage where the magnetometers might work. I found the main bulkhead just aft of the baggage compartment has too much ferrous metal and/or magnetic impulse from steel bolts, bell-cranks, servos, and the strobe light power supply and the magnetic deviation was as bad as it was in the wingtip (especially on the GRT magnetometer. The platform in front of the horizontal stabilizer was suitable for the Dynon remote compass but there isn’t enough space for the both the Dynon and GRT units (have to have at least 8 inches of wire separation)…I called Ben (the chief engineer at Grand Rapids Technologies) and he told me I will have to rewire the strobe lights with shielded wire AND the wing tip is the best place to mount the GRT magnetometer…so the Dynon remote compass will be mounted on the platform under the tail and the GRT unit will be re-installed in the wingtip after rewire using shielded wires.
