Brief Description:  Empennage Fiberglass

Spent several hours today (thinking about and) preparing the mount area for the Whelen Tail/Strobe light in the figerglass Rudder bottom. There is so little room to work, a means to permanently install the nuts in a locked posistion on the inside surface of the fiberglass is required. The method I used was to solder a heavy guage piece of stiff copper wire to the sides of the nuts. The length of this wire is roughly half the circumference of the circle which is the diameter of the distance between the two nuts when mounted. This provides a means to: a) secure the nuts from twisting during insertion of the mounting screws, b) provides a surface to epoxy the nuts in place too the inside of the fiberglass tip. Additionally, a considerable amount of time was spent cleaning/preparing the inside surface of the fiberglass so the nuts would set in the proper position/alignment. Once all was ready, the nut assembly was epoxied in place and left overnight to harden up.
