Brief Description:  Dimpling the Rudder Parts

Tonight I dimpled all of the rudder parts (ribs, spar and skins). Unfortunately, I forgot to kerf the edges of the skin (trailing edge side) before dimpling. Kerfing is the act of putting a very slight bend along the edge of two opposing skins, which is hardly noticable to the eye. When the two skins are riveted together, this bend alows them to come together tightly.

For some reason, I thought I could kerf the skins after dimpling. I even have special tool to do it, which makes a perfect bend. Well, as you may or may not know, the tool puts the kerf line right along the line of holes. Since the holes were now dimpled, the toold wouldn't work to kerf the edge. Asking around, I found out that many people choose not to kerf the edge, so I'm hoping that my trailing edge will still close up nice and tightly without kerfing.

I am always careful to mark the holes that DON'T get dimpled, so I don't make a mistake.
