So after painting the walls, we had originally planned to move right on to epoxy-coating the floors, thinking acid prep of the concrete would be enough. However, after checking the web for information about proper installation of epoxy systems, we decided that the floors had to be ground down to virgin concrete, instead of the severely stained, oily concrete we had started with. In retrospect, it would have been a lot easier to rent a scarifier than to do it by hand with a 7" angle grinder! What a bunch of tedious work that was..
