Brief Description:  Filling Sanding, Filling on FG Top

Today, I began filling in order to get a nice, glassy surface on the interior of the fiberglass canopy top. My intent is to paint the interior of the top and have that be the finished surface. I thought I might install the Aerosport Products headliner, but after seeing the process and cost of this, I decided against it. I actually purchased their headliner "kit" second-hand from another RV-10 builder and it was basically just a sheet of thin fiberglass that you then have to final cut to fit your canopy exactly. Once that's done, you're supposed to wrap the fiberglass with foam, glue and then fabric, to achieve the final "headliner insert." After that, you're supposed to glue a bunch of Velcro strips to the canopy top and install the headliner insert. Unfortunately, their "kit" doesn't come with any of those materials (not even fabric and foam), and it's made to fit with their overhead console. So, if you're not going to install an overhead console, now you have a strip in the middle of the fiberglass insert that needs to be filled (i.e. you have to turn two pieces into one piece). This doesn't seem to be worth the trouble, cost or weight. To add insult to injury, their headliner doesn't even cover the forward section of the fiberglass canopy top, where the doors attach, which is the ugliest section of finish on the top! I am going to try to get a nice, glassy finish EVERYWHERE on the top, paint it and go with that as the finished interior.
