Brief Description: Clean Shop & EAA Technical Advisor Inspection
The great thing about being an EAA member and belonging to a local chapter, is that you have access to EAA Technical Advisors. These are experienced plane builders (some of which have built more than a few) who will look over your project with a fine-toothed comb and talk, frankly, with you about any errors that may need correction. After my second meeting with the local Chapter 301 (Denver), I set up an inspection.
I started the day by cleaning up my shop for a couple hours. It reminded me of how you clean the house before important company comes over... :)
While being very familiar with the Vans family of aircraft kits, my inspector, John Linz, is also an expert in composites, having built a Lancair IV-P. He is currently working with several other experienced homebuilders to build a partially composite floatplane, of their own design. It was great to spend time with John, looking over my project. I pointed out all the blemishes I had made so far (i.e. couple of potentially over-smashed rivets, ding from a bucking bar that got too close to the skin, etc). John also found that the hinges on my elevators weren't safety-wired yet, but I showed him my running to-do list, which included that. At the time I installed the hinges, I didn't have tie wire, or a twister (got them with my flaring tool). All in all, it was a great visit. I went from being worried about my few little skeletons to John telling me that, in his opinion, I was building a showplane. He told me my rivet work was outstanding and that the straightness of my tailfeathers was impressive. What a great visit!
