Brief Description:  Sanding, hinges. riveting (1 of 2)

Spent about a half hour sanding everything that I filled yesterday. It's as good as I can get it for now, until I start to prime paint, which will likely show some minor areas to finish.

Then I worked on getting the lower cowl attached to their hinge halves across the bottom. I already had the hinge halves in place on the fuselage, with pilot holes drilled. So how to transfer that to the cowl fiberglass, when the cowl COVERS the hinges?

Thanks to an article in a recent Sport Pilot magazine I bought a laser sighting device for pistols. I couldn't use a laser pointer from Staples since those all have a switch the requires you to hold it down to shine the laser. The gun sighting laser had an actual on/off switch. Then I mounted it to a 2x4 base with an Adel clamp (photo 1), shining upward.

So with the cowl NOT over the hinge, I pointed the laser at a hinge hole (photo 2). Then with the laser still on, I installed the lower cowl. Not the laser light was on the cowl, with the hole in the hinge directly behind it!

The laser's point of light is smaller than in these photos. The laser light is spreading out before it gets to the camera.

I marked the center of the laser point with a Sharpie, then drilled a pilot hole. Shining a flashlight into the new hole allowed me so see where I was in relation to the hinge hole (I could see the hinge hole), which would tell me if I needed to shift the final updrilled hole over at all, to center on the hinge hole.

I repeated this for 3 holes on each side of the exhaust outlet to establish a straight line. Once the cowl was off, I drilled the rest of the holes, then updrilled, then deburred and cleaned up all the fiberglass and aluminum holes.

On the next page of photos you'll see I riveted them in place.
