Brief Description:  Oil Cooler

Worked on installing the bottom-mounted oil cooler. The instructions are missing some important information, and the supplied metal shroud doesn't match the existing engine block. I think Sonex makes this stuff, then never ever checks it again to see if it works. Third party things change, but Sonex seems unaware, so they send parts that dont fit.

- The oil cooler shroud comes with 4 slotted holes. They are in the same location on both sides of the shroud, but the engine block holes are asymetric. The shroud comes with the round hole in it for the oil temperature sender, so the location of the shroud fore and aft is set.
A. The shroud is not wide enough to fit the engine block. I had to unbend then rebend one side.
B. The holes in the engine block, where the shroud is supposed to attach, are in DIFFERENT locations on both sides of the engine block. I had to redrill all four holes (see photo 2).
C. But I also had to redrill the 4 holes since they were NOT located in the right places with the shroud centered on the oil temp sender.

Also, on page 51 of the manual it says to, "cut an air passage in the bottom of the shroud and install and air deflector to force air traveling under the oil sump to exit through the oil cooler."

But there are NO instructions on where and how big to make this air passage, nothing about how to make and locate this air deflector, and not photographs of any of this.

This stuff is just inexcusable to me. The AeroVee has been out there long enough that these things should have been corrected.

When going through Carl Orton's web site today:
http://mykitlog.com/users/display_log.php?user=corton&project=884&category=6217&log=120363&row=33

I noted he had the same issue as B, above. Turns out the oil cooler baffle DOES have offset holes, but the baffle instructions neglect to highlight that, so I, like Carl, bent mine in the wrong direction! The new holes I drilled will work, it's just a bummer that Sonex has to
