Brief Description:  Throttle quadrant installation

Finally decided to locate my throttle quadrant. I put some couch cusions on the seat (since I don't have any upholstery yet), and played with different locations.

Before trying it out I put the canopy frame pieces in place, since there is a handle on the canopy closure piece that others have noted would interfere with the Sonex throttle quadrant. And sure enough, in the place where I thought I would put it, when I pulled the throttle all the way back it hit the handle.

I was also having clearance issues with the plans-built trim lever getting in the way of where the throttle cable would go.

So per photo #1 I finally decided to make an flat extension to mount the throttle on. Most people mount the quadrant on the AFT side of the vertical angle. But this guaranteed that throttle hit the canopy handle. So I mounted my extension on the FORWARD side of the vertical angle, and then mounted the throttle quadrant on the FORWARD face of the extension. Now the throttle was comfortably off the side of the fuselage, and when the throttle was fully rearward it did not contact the canopy handle (photo #3).

I sat in Keith Macht's Sonex today, which had the Sonex throttle quadrant, but also had the integral mixture bracket. For me with my long legs my left leg was pressed into the bracket, so I decided for sure to mount my mixture handle on the corner bracket that holds the instrument panel to the fuselage vertical stringer.

This was the first time I spent lots of time sitting in the cockpit, and the first time with some cushions to simulate my future upholstery. It was a lot of fun just to sit there and play with the throttle!
