Brief Description:  Fitting control surfaces to wings

Max Emmighausen, who is building a Waiex, and his wife Cathy were visting this weekend. Max helped me install the hinge pins in all the control surfaces. I was anxious to see how/if the surfaces went on, and if there were any interferences.

Getting the hinges in by hand was just not going to work, so Max suggested we use a 6' hinge pin to "drill though" the length of the hinges. So we flattened the end of a hinge pin like a spade bit, then used the Scotch Brite wheel to make he actual diameter of the spade just a bit more than the standard diameter of the hinge pin.

Now we chucked the pin in my cordless drill, lined up the hinge halves, and spun the spade-tipped hinge pin down the length of the hinge halves. This opened up the inside diameter of the hinges by ever so little, and allowed the hinge to force its way through. I took some pushing, but it went all the way through for all 4 surfaces (flaps and ailerons). We pulled the hinge pin out by reversing the drill and backing it out (came out very easy), then put the "final" hinge pin in as a test. It went in very well, and all the surfaces moved freely!

There were a couple of interferences of the aileron counterweights on the cutout of the rear wing spar, so I marked those for later tweaking.
