Brief Description:  Right Wing - Riveting

Last night started on ribs #12 and #11. Today riveted all the way down to the 04 rib, and ran into trouble.

I had noticed the other day that other builders had noted (because the plans don't) that you need to rivet the 01 - 04 ribs from the flanged side, so the porcupine of rivets don't get in the way of the rivet gun when riveting the ribs on. Well, I only saw those web sites AFTER I had of course riveted the other way (photo #1). I tried some workarounds but nothing worked.

So I bit the bullet and drilled out 8 rivets from each rib (x4 ribs), and put them in from the other side. It was still tricky getting the rivet gun in there, but with a "ramp" that I made to allow the rivet gut to set at an angle, I got it to work.

Before I installed the #1, #2 or #3 ribs (because I needed space) I set the forward (nose) root rib. That was tricky. The aft root rib had the rear spar to align from. The forward rib had no such thing. So I used a series of straight edges to align the nose and top surfaces of the root rib with all the other ribs, clamped it in place, and used my 12" long drill bits to updrill. The of course everything got riveted.

I didn't get the #1 or #2 ribs done. Tomorrow.
