Brief Description:  Right Wing - rear spar to ribs

I took yesterday off from building to clear my head about the process. That was a good thing. I made sense of it today. My trepidation came from the fact that when scratch building everything is not perfect, and I only have the holes that I drilled in the materials. So if something doesn't align quite right, I have to figure out how to make it work. The rear spar was just such an animal.

Since I bent my own spar channels they weren't quite perfect from one end to the other. Close enough, but it still meant I had to figure out what was going to be my reference point so that at least one datum line would be as perfect as I could make it.

So with the forward spar and ribs upside down on the table and tipped up so the rib back end of the rear rib flanges were tangent to the work surface, I weighted donw the ribs to make sure they all sat hard against the work table. Then I put the rear spar against the rear vertical flange of the ribs and clamped the rear spar down (photo #1).

Now I could sight my centering guidelines on the flanges, through the pilot holes in the rear spar, and use a 12" drill bit to drill through the rib flanges, through the spar pilot holes, cleco'ing as I went. Then I updrilled all the holes to rivet-size.

Tomorrow I'll make and begin to locate the forward and aft root ribs.
