Brief Description:  Right Wing - Updrill for spar mating

Before I install any wing ribs I needed to updrill the holes that mate the wing spars together.

There are 5 holes:
- 3 are alignment holes that need to be 1/4" diameter for 1/4" bolts
- 2 will be 3/8" holes for the wing mounting block bolts

The Sonex plans say to updrill the mouting blocks to 1/4", and then to updrill to 3/8" when the spars are mated in the aircraft for wing rigging. But there is another method that has gone around the Yahoo Sonex forum for many years. It's in the Yahoo Sonex files as a PDF, but I converted those 3 pages into JPGs so I could post them here. The file is called:

"Spar Mating Proceedure Per Bill Sargent 3-14-01.PDF"

Essentially you mate the spars, level them on your drill press, and drill out to 3/8" NOW, instead of later. When the spars are in the aircraft you use a 3/8" o.d. "tube" to go in the mounting block holes, and then drill with a smaller diameter drill bit using the inside diameter of the "tube" as a drill guide. With those pilot holes in place you can remove the spars and updrill them to 3/8".

This is the method I used tonight, with photos on the next pages.
