Brief Description: Finished standard; started flush rivets
In the right wing spar I finished setting all the standard (round head) rivets. I then began working on the flush rivets.
On some other web sites and Sonex Talk posts several people had noted that the .032 piece of the web, where it lapped over countersunk holes, did not need to be pre-dimpled; that the act of pounding the rivets would do the dimpling. I did NOT find that to be the case. Yes, it did dimple the .032, but each rivet was hit-or-miss as to how well it dimpled. In most cases a lot of touch-up was required, taking a lot of time and adding frustration.
Since I already had the spar sections being riveted I did not have the option to go back and pre-dimple the .032 piece. So I did the next best thing. I used the Sonex simple dimple die and just dimpled the .032 piece in place using my hand rivet squeezer (put the male end against the .032 piece, put the nail through to the other side, attach the rivet squeezer to the nail and pull). THAT seems to make the flush rivets work a whole lot better.
