Brief Description:  Remove con rods; clean more parts (1 of 3)

1. Removed the connecting rods from the crank. Examined bearings & journals (bagged & tagged them so they go back in the same positions they came out).
2. Removed lifters (bagged & tagged them so they go back in the same positions they came out).
3. Cleaned more of the miscellaneous parts in the first photo, below.
4. Cleaned the carbon off the heads. There was build up where the new head gasket will go. To get a good seat I had to clean it up. I used a dental pick, then sand paper, then Scotch Brite pads.
5. Began to soak 1/2 of the case in TSP and water.
6. Cleaned up the crank and the cam shaft with degreaser.
7. Replaced the nuts on the the rocker arms (the stock ones start to get rounded over with all the valve adjusting, so I thought this a good time to replace them for $5.00).

Status of bearings & journals:

The journals all look pretty good. There is some wear, but I don't see anything unusual. Certainly nothing that can be felt. The crank shaft bearings don't look horrible, but they don't look good (to me) either. The photos over-highlight the wear, but there is definite scoring and lots of pitting. I'm guessing that may be from the metals in the oil, but I don't know for sure. The cam shaft lobes look good, too.
