So I decided to add sewing to my list of things learned while building and airplane. Actually, I learned to sew in 6th grade, nearly 40 years ago, but I haven't used a sewing machine since.
I already had extra fabric left from my seat cusions, and I figured it was going to cost me $100 to get new stick boots made, so I decided to invest $90 in a sewing machine instead, and do it myself.
I measured the location of the stick in the airplane, then took some rough measurements for the 4 panels that would make up the boot, with enough room to move the stick. I then mocked up some paper patterns on my bench. Once I was happy with the dimensions I made a full size paper pattern with my CAD software and a plotter. I realized I could make the boot as a single piece instead of 4 sewn panels.
