Brief Description:  1 day, 3rd of 3 flights

July 19, 2014 (Flight #9)
• Took off for Fitchburg (FIT).
• Hobbs: 7.3 to 9.3 = 2.0 hrs
• CHTs 1 & 3 still bumping up an over 400 the first 20 minutes to ½ hour of flight, and when doing multiple takeoffs. Later into the flights, not so much. Mostly OK.
• I need to look at tightening up the baffle plenums.
• OAT on all flights was 62 to 75 at altitude. I can’t keep the oil temperature UP. It’s about 158 to 165 degrees.
• OP still right at 39 psi, but while taxiing for takeoffs at FIT, sometimes dropped to 20psi. Bumping up the idle speed to 1,400 rpm raised it back to 26, but I don’t like idling that high.
• Did 4 full-stop landings at FIT. Tried both 20 and 30 degrees of flaps.
o I like full flaps (30 deg). Plane doesn’t float so much and my landings don’t “bounce,” if not perfect.
• On climbing out, CHTs 1 & 3 kept going over 400, up to 411 sometimes. Had to throttle back some and flatten the climb to only about 250 fpm, which is not pleasant with the tree-covered hills around the airport.
• Half way back to 6B6 I spent a full hour just doing air work:
o Wing-overs (many)
o Zero G’s (just for fun)
o 45-60 deg steep turns. Pulled 2.5 to 3 G’s (many)
o More L/R spins. I got good entries into them, and I could often get the spin to stop in ½ turn. I let one spin go a full turn before attempting recovery. Recovered right away. I’m having fun with spins!
• Took data to calibrate airspeed accuracy. At 2,500 rpm, at 2,500 feet at 62 deg OAT.
o Flew 0 deg heading: 79 IAS, 91 GS (via GPS)
o Flew 90 deg heading: 75 IAS, 80 GS
o Flew 180 deg heading: 81 IAS, 81 GS
• Voltage was constant at 11.7 to 11.8. Seems awfully low. Other flights were up at 12.4 to 12.6. I did have some electrical load:
o EFIS
o Aux (running the portable GPS)
o Strobe and Position lights (low voltage LEDs)
o Landing light (sometimes)
• Landed back at 6B6
• Filled up on fuel. Put in 7.8 gallons.
o For 2.4 hours that’s 3.25 gallons/hour! And I hardly ever leane
