Brief Description:  Flight #5

• Took the airplane out early in the morning before work. First time since fixing the engine click. Glad to say I seemed to have fixed it, and all is well.
• Hobbs: 3.5 to 4.2 = 0.7 hrs
o Fuel: my tank and sight tube are not well calibrated yet, but it looks like I used about 3 gallons of 100LL.
• Tried taking off with the tail wheel up this time. Directional control easier; less touchy. With the tailwheel on the ground I find I have to be really light on the pedals or I get the tail moving and the tail wheel making little skids across the pavement. I liked the tail-up takeoff. Flatter on the initial climbout, but then climbed normally.
• Engine ran great!
o WOT at 3,226 RPM level flight
o CHT #1 touching 400 – 402 occasionally, but most of the time just under. All others running 380+.
o EGTs running around 1370 on the high end.
o Oil temp up to 201 F at one point, but rest of the time at 186-190 F.
o Oil pressure steady around 39 psi
• WOT at 3,226 rpm
o Level flight
o 118 kts indicated
• Right wing definitely “heavy’. Looks to me like it’s the aileron rigging. I think I need to adjust both to raise the right wing.
• Slow flight to stall
o Engine to idle as I pitched up
o 34 kts indicated with high pitch
o 1st try, broke to the left, but easy recovery
o 2nd try, better job on the rudder pedals, no break at all. Nose dropped benignly and a with some power and then stick, hardly lost any altitude. Didn’t make note of the actual altitude loss, so next time I will.
• Did several high-G steep turns in both directions. Engine, controls and instruments all functioned perfectly.
• Did some nose down to 140 kts and all controls behaved. No flutter.
• Still overshooting my landing final approaches. The airplane is slippery, I think, and it’s just easy to burn through. I need to start my turn earlier.
• Landed with 2 notches of flaps this time (instead of 3). Landed well. Will have to try that some more to feel the difference.
