Last night I noted the EGT probe on the pilot side, forward, was hitting the cowl. I asked Sonex about bending it, but they didn't know if it could be. So I tried it. I put it in a vice and bent it over nearly 45 deg with a heavy hammer. If it affects the readings at all I'll just buy a new one, seal the hole, and install it in a different location.

In photo 2 I finally marked the cowl inlets per Sonex's instructions, and this is how much needs to be removed. Same on the other side, and later it will be for the top piece as well.

In photo 3 I used a step drill at the center point of the oil cooler cutout, to see how well it was lined up with the oil cooler inlet, before I cut it away. Good thing I did. The lower, GREEN, lines were from Sonex's measurements, but the starter hole was at the BOTTOM lip of the oil cooler baffle. So I used that as the bottom of the cutout and redrew it in BLUE, above.

UPDATE October 2016:
- After flying for more than 2 years now, I have found the oil cooler opening to be TOO LARGE.
- A larger openign appears to pressurize the cowl area and not let the engine cooling air aroud the heads work properly. It also OVER cools the oil.
- If you have a bottom mounted oil cooler I also recommend you make that opening smaller, by something like 50%.
- HOWEVER, if you live in a very warm climate you might need to experiment. I fly in cold temps in the winter, where I don't really need the oil cooler opening at all. I also fly in 100 deg F weather in the summer and still found the stock opening too large, overcooling the oil and adding to drag.
