When I tried the radio for the first time something was definitely wrong with the wiring. So I asked MGL for the wiring diagram for the wiring harness. I know VERY little about electronics, but I knew I could use the "continuity" feature of a multi-meter to see if I have the wiring right: touch one probe to a certain part of the jack, and touch the other probe to the pin on the wiring harness connector that "should" correspond. If the multi-meter beeps then the circuit is good. If it does not beep then I have something wired wrong.
I had lots of stuff wired wrong.
So I cut the jacks off the end of the shielded wires and tested each WIRE in the bundle against the pins on the harness connector. So I knew which color wire was wired to each pin.
I then re-attached the pilot headphone jack to the correct wires. I will do the pilot's mic jack next, and test the radio again. Assuming all works, I will do to the passenger side jacks.
