On Nate Jackson's suggestion, I started on the vertical stab rather than the horizontal stab. It's a much simpler piece, and is a better piece to hone your skills than all the complicated stuff that makes up the horizontal stab.
I removed the protective blue plastic, and wrote the part numbers on all the parts with a Sharpie. I removed all the factory labels and took the residue off with Goof Off.
The VS-808PP spar doubler was hugely warped, so I rolled it several times over the edge of my work bench to get most of the warp out. The edges of the piece were also in rough shape and needed a lot of work on the Scotch Brite wheel, various files, and sandpaper. There were a lot of imperfections from the stamping process that left a lot of stress risers.
