Brief Description:  Part Three Wiring of Instrument Panel

Photo 1: The wire stripper I bought at radio Shack [$12.00] is used to strip the inner wires bare. It grasps the wire being stripped as shown on the left of the cutters ... and ....Photo 2: .... strips the wire insulation off as shown in this image. It is important to make clean cuts of the wires, this and any proper stripping tool will make good clean cuts with out nicking the wires as they are stripped of their coating. Not nicking the wire assures that all wires in the bundle are solid, not weakening the structure, and assures good sound electrical conductivity. Photo 3: Here I have completely stripped the wires, there were no nicks in any of the wires in the strands, and no strands were cut off. I have used a solder iron to tin the ends of the wires to give them a good solid, rigid structure to attach the terminals on. It is difficult to see the wires in any fine detail in the photo, but when you tin the leads, you should be able to fill the wiring bundle with solder. Done properly, the solder will flow into, and wick into, the bundle; you should be able to see the layout of the strands in the bundle. This also makes it much easier to solder the connectors on after they have been crimped.
