I have been doing some research on VAF.net for a while and reading threads related to cockpit interior painting. The spectrum ranges from paying $2,000 plus for a professional job and down to as little as $30 for a do it yourself rattle can version. I have seen several of the rattle can variety at Oshkosh and think I can do an acceptable job and save a bunch of money going that route.
The four paints I tried were all Rustoleum brand an included: Hammered Grey, Metallic Satin Nickel, Hammered Silver, and Textured Grey. My goal is to have an attractive color that won't cause a lot of glare with the bubble canopy and will also accent my planned black instrument panel. My RV-7 will have a military themed paint scheme so a grey or silver is what I have in mind.
The pictures don't show much, but all of the paints went on pretty well and look good with two coats. The Hammered Grey looks good, but doesn't have much of the hammered look, and does have some glare from my shop lights. The Metallic Satin Nickel is pretty light and almost a silver with metallic flakes, but it surprisingly doesn't have much glare at all. The Hammered Silver has a lot of the hammered look and is pretty sharp. It does have quite a bit of glare though. The Textured Grey looks really nice, is maybe a little darker than I was thinking, and does have a fair amount of glare.
The Metallic Satin Nickel was Coltens favorite and I think I may like it best also. I am going to wait a few weeks for all of them to cure good, and then see how hard each is to scrap off. The cockpit will take a fair amount of abuse with seat belt buckles being dropped, scuffed when getting in and out, and just general wear and tear so I want something that is tough.
