Brief Description:  engine tear down

Turns out my upper, long head bolts are about 3/8" too long. This is what allowed the nut to pass below the threads of the bolt. All the other measurements are spot on, all the machining work is accurate. The long bolts are uneven, while the short head bolts are spot on the specified original length, are are absolutley consistent in length. How could they be so long? I don't think its possible to stretch a bolt 3/8" without snapping it in two. Hmmm.... I bought a second brand new torque wrench, this time a beam wrench to double check in case I grossly over torqued them. Nope, both wrenches are in perfect agreement. The head bolts are original, so who know what happened or was changed since 1964. The agreed upon solution from SPA is to remove and replace the head bolts. While this will give me a newer, stronger version; it is usually quite a challenge to remove steel bolts that have been threaded in an aluminum block for the last 54 years! If the bolt shears, the threads are stripped, or any other problems, I'll have to bore the holes and intall time-cert threads. Wish me luck!!!
