Brief Description:  Cooling Challenges

I opened the inlets rings up from 4.5" to 5.5" and I closed off part of the side "gill vents" to see if that would help the cooling. I saw a marginal improvement but still not good enough. I taped little bits of string all around the side vent, cowling, and forward fuselage on the pilots side, then mounted a cheap GoPro knockoff action camera on the wing strut (Only a $40 loss if the camera fell off inspite of the expert zip tie installation ;). After flying and reviewing the video, I could see the high pressure air flowing around the front of the lower windsheild, then down the gil vent and INTO the bottom corner of the cowling. No wonder I'm having cooling issues!!! I've got some reverse flow causing some serious turbulence right at the exit for the cooling air. So... Next I'll try completely blocking off the side gil exits. If that works, I'll look at a permanent solution. For now I'm experiementing using carved foam and duct tape. I guess that's why they call it EXPERIMENTAL aviation ;-))) I'm still having fun though, that's what counts.
