Brief Description:  Rear Alternator installation

Now this is clever! Corvairs have been flying for years with an alternator mounted on the front of the engine, in fact, the prop hub has an integrated belt pulley. However, SPA has come out with a rear mounted alternator a few year ago. Its direct drive, so it doesn't charge much at idle, however, at power it puts out 20amps. With all my LED lights and EFIS, I should be just fine on power consumption. Of course, now I have the option of adding a second alternator up front if I need redunancy :-)

The installation is clever. Two pins are threaded into the tapped holes of the harmonic balancer, then each are covered with a thick piece of hose. The original pulley is replaced with a plate that has two hole in it for each hose covered pin. Thus the alternator is driven without being mechanically linked to the balancer. This method puts no binding load on the balancer nor disturbs the dampening effect. Brilliant! You can also see the oil top cover, which has the adapter for the oil filter and the adapter for the oil cooler. I'll run the first hour break in with the cheap Fram filter, then switch to the higher quality Wix.
