Well it was finally time to drill the main spar holes. The aft section of the spar box was removed and using the holes previously drilled in the spar mounting blocks as guides, the holes were drilled from back to front on both sides using a 1/4" drill bit. Next the aft spar box parts were re-installed, and the holes were drilled again, this time front to back with the 1/4" drill bit. Now that there was a pilot hole through the whole assembly all drilling was made from back to front. Next holes were up drilled to 5/16" using a pilot drill bit. The final holes were drilled using a 3/8" bit with a non-cutting pilot section. This went very well. Hugh Bechham was kind enough to loan out his drill bit for my, and many others, use. These drill bits made the process go smoothly. With the holes drilled, two 3/8 bolts were temporarily installed as pins and the support shims were removed. The measurements wree re-taken and I'm very happy to report that everything is with-in 1/32" of the plans! I can hardly believe it! Time for a beer!
