Brief Description:  Resolved issue with stab horn drilling

Resolved issue with stab horn drillinghere is note exchange with Vans:Bill, Even with no reinforcement, you'll not likely see any problem with the hole as drilled simply because of the direction of the loads. However, to feel good about it, either a welded washer or a riveted doubler will bring the strength up well above original so either of those options is perfectly acceptable. scott at van's Date sent: Thu, 22 Feb 2007 10:50:09 -0500From: MauleDriver To: scottr@vansaircraft.comSubject: RV10 Elevator Control Horn drilling - bottom edge hole distance - resend with builder ID #40605(I talked to Ken regarding this yesterday)Reference 11-3 steps 6&7Having selected the aft horn per step 6, I drilled the 3/16" hole asdescribed in step 7 and figure 3. That is 3/8" from bottom edge and1/2" from front edge. Reference 11-3 steps 8 thru 12 However, afterfabricating a drill guide block and drilling the hole thru to thesecond horn, I discovered that the second horn was a bit shorter. Therefore the distance of the hole from the bottom edge of the horn isa bit less than 3/8".The hole is 9/32" from the bottom of the horn (and roughly 9/16" fromfront edge) 9/32" is 3/32" short of the 3/8 specified. (see photo)I consulted with my EAA Tech Counselor (RandySmith).Based on that consultation, I'm of the opinion that this edge distancewill be sufficient. While it is clear that the front edge distance isvery critical on this very critical part, the bottom edge is a bitless critical and that 9/32" from hole center to edge will last theproverbial 100 years.Does your engineering team see a problem with this conclusion? On the other hand, if a repair option is pursued, the "weld the holeclosed and re-drill" seems problematic on several counts. Particularly because the new hole will likely penetrate the weldedrepair area. Based on my consultation with my Tech Counselor, we cameup wi
