Like every other step in building your first, about the time you are 50% done, you start getting enough skill to do it well. The spinner was great. Should have done it separately so the dust would be at an absolute minimum but still very clean.
I'm really liking the single stage now. It's unforgiving but once you are done, it's ready to fly. No sanding, no extra coats, no clear coat. Very glossy and deep finish.
This time I controlled for temperature. So much so that I almost blew it at the end as the paint in the gun started to set. I set up a hot plate in the room with water bath. Instead of trying to heat the mixing pot or the paint can, I just heated the pot on the gun. Perfect! It heats quickly with only at 10 or 15 degree delta. I kept the water arount 125, the room was 69 or 70. When ready to paint I could put the pot in the water bath for a minute or 2 and get it up to 90 or so. The difference was quite noticeable - nice flow and all. However, it sets up a bit quicker and I could tell when spraying the trim tabs that it had started. I almost quit but thought I could get a way with it... and I did. Gun was a bit harder to clean but not much.
A VERY successful day. Ready for the fuselage!
Postscript - the fin did not turn out well. I think it was 1) too cold, 2) the paint was setting up, and 3) I had some runs in the primer that I didn't sand out. Mounted on the fuse along with the fairing it looks like 2 different paints. Uggghh! It will be redone later. The spinner is a beaut! I just set it up in the shop for inspiration as painting continues.
