Brief Description:  Painting the tail red - Imron Autumn Sunburst Sing

Well I shot the horizontal stab, an elevator and a few miscellaneous parts. It turned out "OK".

And I had a major epiphany:
I was determined to 1) simplify the painting process as much as possible and 2) put a durable and good looking finish on my project.

Dupont Imron was chosen as one of several possible durable, quality paints - good choice!

Imron Elite Single Stage was chosen to significantly reduce the work involved compared with Base Coat/Clear Coat - potentially a good choice if fully understood but I didn't and it wasn't.

All the pros suggested BC/CC because "you can fix it". What they meant is that no matter what you do, you can fix it and make it perfect if you want. Sanding, re-painting, sanding until it's right, then clear coat for the shiny protective top coat.

Single Stage goes on in a single coat, no sanding, no polishing, that's it. Looks great. But it has to go on perfectly. For a first timer, there is no such thing. It's designed for HVLP and I have a good setup... but it works better with a professional conversion HVLP gun, and a professional hand, and industrial painting processes that are well tuned and repeated. Controlled paint temps and surface temps can help a lot. Given my situation, I can do a good job with an acceptable amount of orange peel on a disassembled plane with white or similar colors. However, shooting a pearlescent, fully saturated color will be less than perfect. And I can't really fix it.

What I conclude at this point:
1) Single Stage is a excellent way to do an all white scheme with either vinyl stripes or minimal painted stripes. No sanding, fast, totally doable with a good amateur setup. You can't be perfect (no orange peel, mirror flat surfaces, etc) but very very good results can be 'easily' achieved.
2) BC/CC is more forgiving which means you can take on any kind of scheme you are up for with the knowledge that you can fix mistakes, climb the learning curve at your own speed, and pursue perfection to whatever level you want. Ju
