Brief Description:  Fabricated wing jig

After looking at some builder pics and staring at the wing for awhile, I decided to go with some PVC pipe at the tip and a ply plate at the root.

Turns out that the big hole in the tip rib is 5" which is a snug fit for 4" PVC coupling So as you can see in pic one I cut some splices up, positioned them on 5' of pipe, and glued them. The pipe is 10' standard but the home improvement stores stock half sizes too. Watch out - there are standard couplings that have a stop in them so 2 pieces can be pushed in ane will stop in the middles. These are <$2 each. One store had splices without the stop - these were almost $10. No apparent reason and the store assured me there was not a pricing error. I would have preferred the latter but got the former and simply cut out the ridge so it would slip down the pipe. Also found out that the diameter tolerance varies - one coupling went thru the rib without a problem, the other had to be sanded down. It's just sewer pipe I guess.

The smaller oblong hole and the round hole snuggly take 3" PVC. In pic one you see the pipe in the round hole but it turns out the oblong hole works better from a balance perspective.

On the root, I just fashiond a ply plate and screwed a hardwood block to it. Used the screws from the shipping kit to bolt it on. Very secure. No other connection is really necessary though I have a 3/32" wood screw in a block at the trailing edge spar. Not needed though.

Turning the wing is an easy 2 person job. But the pipe allows one man turning if care is taken. I think I will setup for one man turn in the booth to keep things simple and the dust down. Opening the door in the booth with wet paint is not good. Ventilation has to be shut down and a another (dirty) person has to be admited. This painting thing can get very anal.
