Brief Description:  Hydruilic position indicator sheme overview

The standard micro switches for the "gear down and locked " and "gear up" indicators lights and saftey interlocks have been replaced . The system I am installing is incorperated within the hydrualic cylinder . PHD provides an option to purchase an actuator with a magnetic band incorperated into the piston. By placing PHD magnetic sensors on the outside of the cylinder at the proper positions the true position of the ram is indicated . This type system is good for millions of cycles in all weather and enviormenal conditions to include fuel and chemical resistant properties. It also has the ability to operate or provide an indication to a very simple three light gear tree or a Programmable Logic controller with an LCD Graphical user interface ( glass touch screen display).

I have used this very same type system on hunderds of hevy industrial metal forming presses / processes . An example would be any automated manufacturing system where a part feeders hydrualic ram postition must be KNOWN before a secondary action can begin . A failure in this type operation could be catastropic . A 100 ton press crashing into /onto a die in the wrong position even slightly could explode like a hand grenade or worse . In many cases these systems can operate at over 3000 cycles per minute 24 hours a day and rarely require replacement or maintance. They are very acurate dependable for heavy heavy use.

WHY ?
Honestley the system parts are expensive - the distributor quote for all required sensors and wiring
was right at $700.00 . I managed to find everything new on ebay and surplus websites for $190.00 which took time ( something I have for free ) . The standard installation per the plans would have cost aproximately $ 50.00 and provide the same information even if a PLC were incorperated .
This is clearly a builders choice , my position is keep it simple with the future in mind .
